Unhappy because of unrequited love.
Fashion is a fickle mistress. As Heidi Klum so eloquently states (ad nauseum) on Project Runway, “One day you're in, the next day you're out.” Never have words so wise and true emanated from the mouth of a fashion industry icon (except perhaps for Karl’s “Sweatpants are a sign of defeat” EDIT: Demi made that up and it got in American Vogue, as well as other places).
Our love affair with fashion is nothing short of ludicrous. Instead of monitoring our finances, cholesterol and blood pressure, we choose to track trends tirelessly, picking them up and then dropping them just as quickly.
“Fashion is a form of ugliness so intolerable that we have to alter it every six months.”
Trends can be as subtle as Peter Pan collars and skinny pants, or as particular as carnivorous animals printed on botanical print t-shirts, à la Givenchy Fall 2011. Either way, we’ll spend hours searching for them in quiet desperation, only to shove them into the back of our closets the following season.
It’s so easy to get caught up in the disposable nature of the fashion industry. According to basic economics all consumers have unlimited wants, and because of this we are never quite fulfilled. We will always be unsatisfied with what we currently have in our wardrobes and yearn for something new. (And don’t try to say that you don’t abide by this to some degree. You can't avoid fashion. As Coco Chanel once said, “Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.”)
We love fashion, but fashion will never love us.

But who's to say this is necessarily a bad thing? Fashion is unpredictable and exciting - if it wasn’t we would have gotten bored with it a long time ago. In a way it's like the relationship with the bad boy your mother warned you about. Think of this blog as a diary dedicated to documenting our -that's you, me and everybody else's- turbulent relationship with fashion.
